A typical day at The Manor
After you prepare coffee and breakfast in the Manor’s renovated kitchen and take your time getting ready for the day, consider a quick walk through the quaint town of Altamont. The Corner Market is within a seven-minute stroll, as is the post office and courthouse, while the public library and plant nursery are just a few minutes farther. Feel like an early lunch? Casa Portale Mexican Restaurant is only 4 minutes’ walk from the doorstep, opens at 11 am, and rumor has it their fajitas are well worth the visit. From there, your group could check the events at the Swiss Historical Society for music festivals, quilt sales, hayrides, and wine and cheese tasting, or try your hand, season-permitting, at target shooting at the Viola Valley Shooting Range, about a twenty-minute ride from the Manor.
Lots Of Places To Enjoy Local
Take a free tour of the Louvin Brothers Country Music Museum, housed in Jim Oliver’s Smoke House and General Store, or learn how to make bonafide moonshine at the Hamper McBee Moonshine Still and Artifacts while you’re on-site. Don’t miss a free sample of their homemade fudge, and be sure to take some of their soaps, jams, sauces, candies, and assorted gift baskets for your friends at home to try. In the mood for a big southern meal? The Smoke House restaurant is only 23 miles from The Manor and offers everything from gravy and grits to fried pie, smothered hash browns, fried green tomatoes, catfish, and ribeye steak.
Ready for another tour? Head on over to Short Mountain Distillery, about 32 miles away from the Manor in Woodbury, to walk a highly impressive 300-acre organic permaculture working farm ending with a tasting of the area’s top-quality moonshine and bourbon for only $10. Consider yourself a connoisseur? Take a cocktail class to confirm it after your tour for an extra fee, or head over to the full-service restaurant for lunch and dinner every day, or their special brunch on Sundays. Finish out the day with a brisk walk in the woods. The Cumberland Plateau rounds out the southern plateau of the Appalachian Mountains in this region, boasting some of the most remarkable expanses of contiguous forest on the eastern side of the nation. Here you’ll find plenty of hickory, oak, and pine trees, as well as ongoing conservation projects of the renowned Nature Conservancy and Natural Resources Defense Council.
Did you bring kids along?
Sometimes kids need a getaway, too! For the younguns (or the young at heart) with you, take a little longer drive to the fresh and saltwater tanks on display at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga (about an hour’s drive away), then take a guided cave tour at Raccoon Mountain Caverns (also in Chattanooga) to see the fossils and fascinating wildlife including salamanders, cave crickets, and bats. For the more adventurous, grab a kayak or canoe in Winchester, around 29 miles away from the Manor, for a reasonably priced and fun fishing trip -- or enjoy a paddle around the Tim Ford Lake to your heart’s content!
